1. Turn It Off Immediately

Even if your laptop appears to be functioning, power it down immediately. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination and can cause severe internal damage.

  • Hold the power button until the device shuts off

  • Unplug the charger

  • If possible, remove the battery

2. Unplug Everything and Dry the Exterior

Remove any peripherals such as USB drives, headphones, mouse, or SD cards.

Use a clean, dry towel or paper towel to gently blot visible moisture from the laptop’s surface.

Tilt the laptop to allow liquid to drain from ports.

Note: Avoid shaking or blowing air into the device, as this can push water deeper into the internals.

3. Avoid Using Heat or Turning It Back On

It may be tempting to attempt to dry the laptop with a hairdryer or heat source. Do not use these methods. Excessive heat can damage internal components or create static electricity.

Also, avoid:

  • Placing the laptop in rice (this is ineffective)

  • Turning the laptop on to “check” if it’s working

4. Let It Drain in an Inverted Position

Open the laptop as wide as possible and place it in an inverted “V” shape (like an upside-down tent) on a towel.

Allow it to dry in a dry, warm (but not hot) area for at least 24–48 hours.

5. Take It to a Professional

Even if the laptop appears to be working fine, internal corrosion could develop over time, leading to further damage.
